SEPA takes action on WEEE

Environment

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has announced the signing of an agreement with Crimestoppers to target companies that illegally carry out waste operations in the Scotland. SEPA is looking to clamp down on those firms that flout waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) rules and cause environmental harm.

A multi-agency approach to tackling this illegal behaviour is now underway in Scotland, with a Crimestoppers helpline being set up to enable members of the public to report any wrongdoings by businesses. In March, European lawmakers voted in favour of stepping up collections of electrical waste for firms in order to cut the amount of illegally dumped items that are being seen across the continent. “With only one-third of e-waste collected in the EU being treated according to the requirements of legislation, it is clear the bold changes to the WEEE Directive are necessary to mitigate the environmental and health risks posed by e-waste,” explained a SEPA representative.

“This is a major push by SEPA to clamp down on bogus companies offering disposal services, I hope that the Environment Agency in England and Wales follows Scotland’s lead” said Tim Hayden, Managing Director of PCD.
