CRT Recycling by Reco-Vie (Recycling) Ltd.
What are Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs)?
Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) are vacuum or picture tubes that are used to convert an electronic signal into a visual image. They are contained in computer monitors, televisions and some camcorders and other monitoring equipment.
Why are CRTs hazardous?
CRTs are included in the impending Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which is expected to be brought into force in the UK during 2006. However, in July 2005 these units were classified as Hazardous under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005. The principal reasons for their classification as hazardous are the requirement to remove the phosphorous coating on the inside of the screen as well as ensuring that the large amounts of lead in the glass do not enter into landfills. A typical CRT contains between 5-8 pounds of lead. Lead is a toxic substance which may cause lead poisoning and is especially harmful to children.
CRTs do not pose any health and safety risk while intact, but may if dismantled and improperly disposed. CRTs need to be stored and handled in a way that minimises breakage. It is especially important not to attempt to dismantle CRTs without proper training, as the high voltage in the capacitor can discharge a lethal charge.
The WEEE Directive and Hazardous Waste Regulations require CRTs to be collected for recovery, re-use or recycling. All separately collected equipment, either from commercial or domestic sources, must go to an authorised treatment facility before it can be recycled.
Our Service
Reco-Vie (Recycling) Limited has access to a number of different CRT processing lines which ensure that the CRT glass is correctly separated and sent for recycling. We presently have processing lines throughout the country which can receive the whole units in their casings, and will safely remove the phosphorus coatings.
We are presently able to recycle and re-use the glass, plastics and metals in CRT’s, recovering 97% of the original materials. Our specially equipped tail-lift vehicles will collect units from our customers and deliver these to recycling lines throughout the UK. Full details of the technologies used can be provided if required.
